Registration for School Year 2020-2021
To aid in the process of course registration, this web page has been created to help parents/students gain a better understanding of which courses a student should be taking, to understand the various options available to students and to find out how to approve the student's plan.
If you review the information listed on this site and you still have any questions or concerns, please contact your student's counselor.

It's Time to Make Your Course Requests!
Please read below for important information in helping to make your course decisions.
- Later this month, we will start the process of selecting courses for the 2020-2021 school year.
- On February 13, 9th-11th grade students will be presented with information about the registration process in their Advisement classes.
- Beginning the week after our February break, the counselors will begin calling Advisement classes to the computer labs to review their course requests and important information concerning the 2020-2021 school year.
- Prior to your students meeting with their counselor, their current academic teachers will have made course recommendations for next year's classes.
- Please see the registration schedule below for the date and time that your student will be reviewing their elective choices for the next school year.
Students and parents are encouraged to use the following tools to review the registration process and the courses that students will request during Registration Week. Students should talk to their teachers, classmates, and counselor about the courses they are interested in taking. Now is the time to do their research on the available choices and make up their mind!
Course Requests versus Actual Classes
- We always stress to students and their families that they are making course requests for next year, not actually signing up for specific classes.
- When the master schedule is finalized over the summer, conflicts may develop between course requests and actual periods that certain courses will be offered.
- Because of this potential conflict, students are asked to select several alternate courses. If a student cannot be scheduled for their top choices, every attempt will be made to schedule them into the alternatives they indicated during registration.
- If a student requests a course or an alternative course during registration, they will not be allowed to make changes to those courses next fall semester.
- Once the master schedule is set, we lose a great deal of our flexibility in making changes (due to a finite number of teachers and available seats). Please advise your students to consider their choices carefully before making their course requests.
Planning Tools
In preparation for Registration Week, we ask that you use the following planning tools.
Elective Course List Handout
- On Thursday, February 13, in advisement classes, students will be provided a 2020-2021 elective form and will review important information concerning course selection (A copy of the 2020-2021 elective form the students will receive is below)
- This form will be used for students to pre-select their elective courses prior to meeting with counselors during Registration Week.
- Students are to bring their completed elective course selections to their Spring registration meeting with counseling department
- See the Registration Schedule for Spring 2020 below
- Students are to choose 8 courses/pathways and rank them in order of preference with a 1 being their top choice
- The top 4 will go in as electives and the bottom 4 will be backups
- Only the names of the Pathways are listed on the elective form. Counselors and teachers will determine the appropriate course in the Pathways selected

Promotion Requirements
In order to be considered “promoted” to the next grade level in high school, a student must earn a minimum number of credits by the end of each year. In other words, you have to pass your classes!
Be aware that a student cannot move ahead of their cohort group (graduating class).
Students do have the option to apply to graduate early (at the end of their third year or middle of their fourth year), but students must apply to be accepted to that program.
- 10th Grade = earned 5 credits by end of 9th grade
- 11th Grade = earned 11 credits by end of 10th grade
- 12th Grade = earned 17 credits by end of 11th grade
- If a student fails to earn the required number of credits, he or she will be considered a “repeater” for the next year.
- Getting off-track in terms of credits means that a student will not graduate on time unless he or she completes additional coursework during summer school or by some other means (see your counselor for more info on these options).

Questions?
Registration for courses usually generates a lot of questions. If you have a question about a particular course, talk to the teacher (or your current teacher in that subject areas). Don’t forget that you can always talk to your school counselor! At NPHS, the counselors are assigned to the student body by last names. Who is your school counselor? Look below!
